Throughout this project I will be researching and defining Anna Sui as a beauty/makeup brand, my main areas of study will be her products, packaging, presentation, promotion and price point. This blog will show all my visual and written work associated with this brief.
As this makeup design is inspired by the Anna Sui Spring 2014 makeup collection shown
on the right I want the makeup to be very soft and natural. I want the skin to look healthy with a natural glow, with natural blush to the cheeks and soft pink eye shadow applied to the lids with a brushing of mascara and enhancing of the brows. The lips with be a soft glossy pink I will use gentle products to high light and contour the face, however I don't want the face to look overly sculpted. The hair would be a soft girly effortless looking updo. There would be a few strands of hair framing around the face. For the shoot I want to use a rose head piece as an accessory in the hair, I have chosen to use roses because of the roses in the background of the 2014 spring makeup collection. I want to keep this look feeling soft and gently as I see Anna Sui as a brand in that way. This look is simple because I don't want it to be over whelming.

This hair design consists of three twists directly at the back of the head. To create this hair style I will need 3 small elastic bands, heat protection spray, curling tongs and a rose head band accessory. There will be a pony tail at the nape of the neck, i will curl this section of hair to give the hair style more shape. There will also be a strand of hair on either side of the face to frame the face and give more of a girly feel to the design.
My model for this design has mid length to long light brown hair. This will suit the design because I think it is a very soft and girlie hair colour and texture to fit with the design.
On the day of the assessment I was feeling a bit nervous as I didn't have a model until the day before the assessment. I felt the assessment went well however I almost ran out of time, my models hair was a lot longer than I had practiced on my dolls head so styling the hair took longer. The top section of the hair wasn't as high as I had wanted it to be. My model has very think and heavy hair so the backcombed padding of the hair wasn't supporting the structure as well. If I was to do this hair style again on this model I would use come crepe hair as padding into the top section of the hair to create the perfect structure that I wanted to create in this section of the hair.
I feel that the contouring with the orange tone blusher was a bit too low, the contouring of the cheeks should have been higher so that there would be more space in between the jaw line and the contouring. I was really happy with the colour of the eye shadow and how it blended from the eyes onto the face. the model had a really good natural shape to the brows for this whispy finish. If i could create this look again I would also like to use more feathery lashes as the feathers remind me of many of the garments for the Anna Sui ready-to-wear catwalk show.
For the timed assessment I have chosen to create my first design, created from the first mood board on my previous post. I have chosen this mood board because the Anna Sui ready-to-wear catwalk show had tones of blue and orange. There was also reference to the 70's and to vikings. I want to add texture using crimpers into the hair, this is a recent S/S 2015 trend. I have included all of these things into my design for my assessment because I believe these are all strong elements referencing to Anna Sui. Below is a copy of the chosen mood board for my final design and there are images and practice of the final hair and makeup design.
Makeup mood board
This makeup mood board represents colour and shape that I have chosen for the final makeup design for the timed assessment.
Hair mood board
This mood board for the hair style is representing viking hair styles, with crimped texture a recent S/S trend and a 70's inspired hair shape.

Hair
This hair style consists of two inverted/chunky braids at either sides of the head and plaited until the ends and secured with a small black elastic band. The top section of the hair will have lots of back combing underneath but will be smooth on top. The ends of the hair would be crimped to add some texture to the hair.
This hair style is inspired by S/S hair trend, crimping parts of the hair and vikings - Anna Sui's inspiration for the ready-to-wear catwalk show.
Tools/products needed:
Heat protection – to protect the hair
Serum – to smooth top section of hair
Cripmers – to create texture in parts of the hair
Hair grips.
Pintail comb – for backcombing and smoothing
4 elastic bands – to secture ends of plaits
Sectioning clips
Hairspray – to hold/finish style.
Step by step how to create this style:
Section a horse show section at the top of the head and use sectioning clips to hold this section in place for now.
Create two inverted chunky plaits at either side of the head, above the ears. Use the end of your pintail comb to create neat sections. Stop creating the chunky french plait when you just go past the back of the ears & plait until you reach the ends of the hair, use the small elastic bands to hold the hair in place.
Create padding in the top section of the hair using your pintail comb. Add serum into the top layer of hair and smooth the hair into the desired shape and use grips to old the hair in place.
Use the crimpers to create texture in the top layers of hair that can be seen. Ensure the back section of the hair is gradually crimped from the ends like in the picture shown below.
Spray the hair with hairspray to finish the style.
To prepare myself for the timed assessment that is inspired by the Anna Sui ready-to-wear catwalk show I have created two mood boards that show hair and makeup inspiration for each design. For colour themes of both of these mood boards I have taken inspiration from Anna Sui's mood board on Pinterest. Pictures form her mood board are taken from paintings and drawing which are often using blue, green and oranges tones. I have included these colours in my designs because of this. the ready-to-wear catwalk show was also heavily inspired by the 70's therefore I have images of fashionable hair and makeup styles during this time. Viking style was also inspiration for the catwalk show, I would like to show this through hair styles for each of these designs. First mood board
Anna Sui’s Autumn/Winter 2015 collection was inspired by Arts and
Crafts movements in Nordic countries. Carl Larsen was a main focus of her
research when she began working on this collection. It was also heavily
inspired by Mid-Century Scandinavian decorative arts – ceramics, furniture and
printed textiles.
On her mood board on Pinterest the description of the board is ‘Norwegian Wood, Midnight Sun,
Northern Lights, Viking Cruise, Après-ski, Dancing Queen, Wicker Man, Swiss
Miss, Snow Bunny…Nanook, Pippi, Thor, Bjork, Asterix…Ibsen, Grieg, Munch,
Bergman…’
On
her website she states that she wanted the catwalk show to look like a
Mythology fairy-tale. As the collection walked down the catwalk, a hippie
spirit style was felt. There were tights to match each outfit and beanies with
horns for a comical feel.
Below is a few of my personal favorite images from Sui's Autumn/Winter 2015 catwalk collection mood board. I can use these images as inspiration for creating my Winter inspired look which I will be designing and creating for my timed assessment next week.
This first image is of the band Abba, a pop band which formed in 1972. I think that I could take some inspiration from the 70's for my assessment look. The middle image is a paiting on ceramics by Bjørn Wiinblad, i chose this image because I can vision it being full of beige, brown, warm oranges and warm pink tones. The last image is of a viking - I think that I could take inspiration form vikings hairstyles to create my look for my timed assessment.
Model Gigi Hadid took to the runway in Sui's collection for this show. Hadid posted an picture on instagram with the caption -
"Finished up NYFW opening @OfficialAnnaSui's beautiful show. One of my favourite beauty looks yet with makeup by Pat McGrath and hair by Garren"
For the show model Hadid had beauctiful loose natural textured waves in her hair, glowing radiant skin and double-winged liner.
Other models had face
tattoo's which were innuit-inspired markings. All of the models had graphic
markings on their eyes – two straight pencil lines extending from the outer
corners, just like Hadid. Golden glowing skin and beautiful flushed cheeks were
also a main feature to create an edgy look.
Hair stylist Garren
wanted to use all the models natural texture of the hair and liven it up a bit
using a few different texturing products. He wanted to create a warrior-like
feel to the look.
I love the fresh silky look that Pat McGrath created for the show and the hair is really simple yet effective. for my interpretation of a hair and makeup design for the Autumn/Winter '15 Ready-to-Wear show I would like to create something a little warmer using colour to represent this.

In 1997 Sui signed an agreement with Wella AG company of
Germany, this was when she bagan producing her own Anna Sui fragrance. She was partially
excited about the fragrance deal because she considers scents to be more inspiration
to her designs and creations.
Albion, a Japanese major manufacturer within cosmetics and
skin care products company also went
into the deal. The original cosmetic line of Anna Sui was release in 1999, the
line included base makeup products, liner, eye shadows, lip colour and nail
colours. ‘’I was able to explore while I was creating it, adding anything that
struck my fancy. The result is a collection that has all the precise colours
for today’s look.’’ – Anna Sui. Colours which were included in the range were silver,
purple, gold and blue. In 2000 the line of skin care products were produced.
Sui has said that the makeup collections that she has released
are very personal to her. All of her products have a tea rose scent; this is
because this is her favourite scent. The packagings for this range were also
embossed with the rose design. The packaging was decorated with the rose theme as
well.
I read in Anna Suis book that she believed that she wanted to
create products that can be used as an accessory – also with a novelty feel to
them. In Asia the beauty products were in the top five best sellers,
celebrities which used the range were Cher, Drew Barrymore and Christina Ricci.
From research I have found that there were seven key words
for the makeup line which are the same for her clothing line – rose, butterfly,
purple, red, black glitter and antique.
To the right is an image of how Anna Sui's cosmetic range is displayed in a shop. This is a recent image as it has the advertisements of the newest Anna Sui mascara from the Spring/Summer makeup collection of this year.
I love how it looks very clean and the products are all placed nicely out onto the surfaces clearly to be able to see the beautiful packaging of each product. The furniture and the decoration of the walls are very fitting to Anna Sui as it is a similar pattern the packaging of Anna Sui products. I found this image on the Anna Sui cosmetic Twitter page.
I
recently read an interview with Anna Sui where the interviewer asked if Anna
Sui’s fashion design influences her makeup range. Sui replied saying that all
her products are inspired by her fashion world. She said that when she was a
teen she dragged a vanity bag from the Salvation Army which had been in a fire
and then painted it black and kept it in her room.
Rococo shapes similar to shapes on packaging
When
Sui opened her first store she brought all the vintage furniture from a flea
market and painted it all black. Wella loved the idea of the rococo shapes and the roses of the furniture
– this has carried through the makeup packaging. Other shapes that are included
in the packaging is from Sui’s jewellery that she has designed.
Sui’s
product packaging is considered as collectors’ items because they are all so
elegant – something that you don’t want to throw away once you have finished
with them. ‘’The other thing that I realized is that not everybody has the
lifestyle or the budget to afford an Anna Sui dress, or maybe they don’t have
anywhere to wear an Anna Sui dress, but they can have the same fantasy in that
tube of lipstick or that nail polish. You get the same excitement when you see
it, so I feel like that’s my job, to put that into every product.’’ –

Before I began thinking about colours and textures that I could use in a makeup design inspired by Anna Sui i wanted to do a bit of research to inspire this design. I came across Anna Sui's 2014 Spring makeup collection. My favourite products from this collection that has inspired the design ideas for my Spring look were the rose cheek colour and the lipstick as it has a cheer finish. These are the main focus points of the makeup design. In a practical makeup lesson we were asked to prepare a day time look for our chosen brand. Below are a few images of inspiration for my test shoot for my Anna Sui day time look design.
I want the makeup to be very soft and natural. I want the skin to look healthy with a natural glow, with natural blush to the cheeks and soft pink eye shadow applied to the lids with a brushing of mascara and enhancing of the brows. Below is the image of the test shoot which I created in 30 minuets in a practical session.
After showing the final image of my test shoot for my day time shoot I was given feed back that the foundation may be a bit too dark - not matching the models skin tone correctly. My lecturer was really happy with the area around the mouth, saying that the colour of the lips and the highlight on he cupids bow looks really elegant. For the final shoot I would like to use a more natural base, maybe with elements of the models natural skin showing through the foundation. I would keep the eye brows natural looking with a bit of powder colour brushed through them to enhance them slightly. Reference (no date k).
