Prepping for the timed assessment

To prepare myself for the timed assessment that is inspired by the Anna Sui ready-to-wear catwalk show I have created two mood boards that show hair and makeup inspiration for each design. For colour themes of both of these mood boards I have taken inspiration from Anna Sui's mood board on Pinterest. Pictures form her mood board are taken from paintings and drawing which are often using blue, green and oranges tones. I have included these colours in my designs because of this. the ready-to-wear catwalk show was also heavily inspired by the 70's therefore I have images of fashionable hair and makeup styles during this time. Viking style was also inspiration for the catwalk show, I would like to show this through hair styles for each of these designs.

Anna Sui Autumn/Winter '15 Ready-to-Wear

Anna Sui’s Autumn/Winter 2015 collection was inspired by Arts and Crafts movements in Nordic countries. Carl Larsen was a main focus of her research when she began working on this collection. It was also heavily inspired by Mid-Century Scandinavian decorative arts – ceramics, furniture and printed textiles.

On her mood board on Pinterest the description of the board is ‘Norwegian Wood, Midnight Sun, Northern Lights, Viking Cruise, Après-ski, Dancing Queen, Wicker Man, Swiss Miss, Snow Bunny…Nanook, Pippi, Thor, Bjork, Asterix…Ibsen, Grieg, Munch, Bergman…’

On her website she states that she wanted the catwalk show to look like a Mythology fairy-tale. As the collection walked down the catwalk, a hippie spirit style was felt. There were tights to match each outfit and beanies with horns for a comical feel.

Below is a few of my personal favorite images from Sui's Autumn/Winter 2015 catwalk collection mood board. I can use these images as inspiration for creating my Winter inspired look which I will be designing and creating for my timed assessment next week.

This first image is of the band Abba, a pop band which formed in 1972. I think that I could take some inspiration from the 70's for my assessment look. The middle image is a paiting on ceramics by Bjørn Wiinblad, i chose this image because I can vision it being full of beige, brown, warm oranges and warm pink tones. The last image is of a viking - I think that I could take inspiration form vikings hairstyles to create my look for my timed assessment.

Model Gigi Hadid took to the runway in Sui's collection for this show. Hadid posted an picture on instagram with the caption -

"Finished up NYFW opening @OfficialAnnaSui's beautiful show. One of my favourite beauty looks yet with makeup by Pat McGrath and hair by Garren"

For the show model Hadid had beauctiful loose natural textured waves in her hair, glowing radiant skin and double-winged liner.

Other models had face tattoo's which were innuit-inspired markings. All of the models had graphic markings on their eyes – two straight pencil lines extending from the outer corners, just like Hadid. Golden glowing skin and beautiful flushed cheeks were also a main feature to create an edgy look.

Hair stylist Garren wanted to use all the models natural texture of the hair and liven it up a bit using a few different texturing products. He wanted to create a warrior-like feel to the look.

I love the fresh silky look that Pat McGrath created for the show and the hair is really simple yet effective. for my interpretation of a hair and makeup design for the Autumn/Winter '15 Ready-to-Wear show I would like to create something a little warmer using colour to represent this.

History of Anna Sui cosmetic range

In 1997 Sui signed an agreement with Wella AG company of Germany, this was when she bagan producing her own Anna Sui fragrance. She was partially excited about the fragrance deal because she considers scents to be more inspiration to her designs and creations.

Albion, a Japanese major manufacturer within cosmetics and skin care products company  also went into the deal. The original cosmetic line of Anna Sui was release in 1999, the line included base makeup products, liner, eye shadows, lip colour and nail colours. ‘’I was able to explore while I was creating it, adding anything that struck my fancy. The result is a collection that has all the precise colours for today’s look.’’ – Anna Sui. Colours which were included in the range were silver, purple, gold and blue. In 2000 the line of skin care products were produced.

Sui has said that the makeup collections that she has released are very personal to her. All of her products have a tea rose scent; this is because this is her favourite scent. The packagings for this range were also embossed with the rose design. The packaging was decorated with the rose theme as well.

I read in Anna Suis book that she believed that she wanted to create products that can be used as an accessory – also with a novelty feel to them. In Asia the beauty products were in the top five best sellers, celebrities which used the range were Cher, Drew Barrymore and Christina Ricci.

From research I have found that there were seven key words for the makeup line which are the same for her clothing line – rose, butterfly, purple, red, black glitter and antique.

To the right is an image of how Anna Sui's cosmetic range is displayed in a shop. This is a recent image as it has the advertisements of the newest Anna Sui mascara from the Spring/Summer makeup collection of this year.

I love how it looks very clean and the products are all placed nicely out onto the surfaces clearly to be able to see the beautiful packaging of each product. The furniture and the decoration of the walls are very fitting to Anna Sui as it is a similar pattern the packaging of Anna Sui products. I found this image on the Anna Sui cosmetic Twitter page.

I recently read an interview with Anna Sui where the interviewer asked if Anna Sui’s fashion design influences her makeup range. Sui replied saying that all her products are inspired by her fashion world. She said that when she was a teen she dragged a vanity bag from the Salvation Army which had been in a fire and then painted it black and kept it in her room.

Rococo shapes
similar to shapes on
packaging
When Sui opened her first store she brought all the vintage furniture from a flea market and painted it all black. Wella loved the idea of the rococo shapes and the roses of the furniture – this has carried through the makeup packaging. Other shapes that are included in the packaging is from Sui’s jewellery that she has designed.

Sui’s product packaging is considered as collectors’ items because they are all so elegant – something that you don’t want to throw away once you have finished with them. ‘’The other thing that I realized is that not everybody has the lifestyle or the budget to afford an Anna Sui dress, or maybe they don’t have anywhere to wear an Anna Sui dress, but they can have the same fantasy in that tube of lipstick or that nail polish. You get the same excitement when you see it, so I feel like that’s my job, to put that into every product.’’ – Anna Sui

Creating a day time look for Anna Sui - test shoot

Before I began thinking about colours and textures that I could use in a makeup design inspired by Anna Sui i wanted to do a bit of research to inspire this design. I came across Anna Sui's 2014 Spring makeup collection.

My favourite products from this collection that has inspired the design ideas for my Spring look were the rose cheek colour and the lipstick as it has a cheer finish. These are the main focus points of the makeup design.

In a practical makeup lesson we were asked to prepare a day time look for our chosen brand. Below are a few images of inspiration for my test shoot for my Anna Sui day time look design.

I want the makeup to be very soft and natural. I want the skin to look healthy with a natural glow, with natural blush to the cheeks and soft pink eye shadow applied to the lids with a brushing of mascara and enhancing of the brows. I will use gentle products to high light and contour the face, however I don't want the face to look overly sculpted.

List of products used to create this look:

  • Body shop vitamin C cream
  • Foundation and concealer
  • Translucent powder
  • Clinque up lighting to contour cheekbones
  • Bodyshop highlighter on brow bone, under eyes/top of cheek bones
  • Inglot frost eye shadow - all over lids
  • Brown eye shadow in brows to enhance brow shape
  • Illamasqua tremble blush applied to cheeks
  • Illamasqua promise cream blush product onto lips
  • Vaseline over top of pink cream product on lips
  • Illamasqua intrigue mixed with bodyshop highlighter on brow bone, down the nose and on cupids bow
  • Illamasqua bronzing duo to contour cheekbones & sides of nose
  • Mascara
Below is the image of the test shoot which I created in 30 minuets in a practical session.

After showing the final image of my test shoot for my day time shoot I was given feed back that the foundation may be a bit too dark - not matching the models skin tone correctly. My lecturer was really happy with the area around the mouth, saying that the colour of the lips and the highlight on he cupids bow looks really elegant.

For the final shoot I would like to use a more natural base, maybe with elements of the models natural skin showing through the foundation. I would keep the eye brows natural looking with a bit of powder colour brushed through them to enhance them slightly.

Anna Sui advertisements

Mascara

This advertisement is for Anna Sui’s mascaras. This specific advertisement has been released for beauty spring/summer 2015. Below is some more information about who word on putting this together.

Anna Sui (Designer)
Steven Meisel (Photographer)
Bill Mullen (Fashion Editor/Stylist)
Guido Palau (Hair Stylist)
Pat McGrath (Makeup Artist)
Mary Howard (Set Designer)

On the 3rd February Anna Sui posted this picture onto her Instagram page. I really like the way Anna Sui uses her Instagram page to share her products, fashion garments and events she is hosting/attending. View her Instagram page here http://instagram.com/officialannasui/

Anna Sui as a designer

Although this advertisement is not for a makeup or beauty product of Anna Sui’s this really caught my eye because I love the contrast of the hair and makeup against the background of the image. I also noticed that it was MUA Kabuki who is one of my favorite MUA’s after seeing his work from the Katy Perry ET video. Below is some more information about who word on putting this together.

Anna Sui La Vie Boheme

Unfortunately I can’t find any information about who worked on creating this image for the advertisement of La Vie De Boheme, although I know that the model is Thairine Garcia while Anna Sui designed the clothes for the image. However I have found some interesting facts about the product which I believe ties in with how the perfume has been advertised. Anna Sui herself has said that this perfume is for an adventurous woman who is romantic at heart. The concept of the fragrance was to capture a woman who loves to travel, has an interest in nature who is beautiful and honest.

The fragrance was made with a purpose to show passion, creativity and originality with energy, joy, peace, love and happiness. Bohemian is a type of style, attitude and spirit.

I personally love this image because it has character, the hair and makeup is very soft while the styling has a lot of character with bold patterns and jewelry. I think that the over all feel of the image matches with the ideas behind the fragrance as it has passion, creativity and originality with a feel of energy, joy and peace.

Below is a collage of my favorite Anna Sui advertisements that I found on Pinterest.

From looking at Anna Sui's advertisements for my beauty and makeup products I have noticed that they are all fairly similar. The logo is present in each advertisement as well as the product placed into the image. However depending on the specific product and its specific uses all the images have a fun and girly feel to them just like the packaging.

Beauty trends inspired by Anna Sui - spring/summer 2015

The look of Anna Sui spring 2015

As Anna Sui is also a fashion designer I thought that it would be interesting to see how hair and makeup teams interpret her designs into hair and makeup. Anna Sui's clothing always involves lots of movement and sparkles. I love how hair style Garren and makeup artist Pat McGarth have represented this through beauty.

The hair and makeup seen on the catwalk of Anna Sui’s spring collection was inspired by rock-and-roll legends such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Jimmy Page. The stylist that worked on the show wanted lots of movement and texture in the hair.

They created this by using moose and blow-drying the hair upside down until it was almost dry and then flipping it back and adding salt spray to ensure that there was loads of texture in the hair. Garren was the hairstyle that created all the hair styles for the show and he called this style the ‘shag’. He said that his main inspirations for this style were Keith Richards and Jimmy Paige. Postiche hair was used for these looks to add more depth and body to the hair.

Anna Sui said herself she took inspiration for her designs from rock stars and she looked at images of Mark Boland and wanted glitter to be part of the over all look of the makeup. Pat McGrath worked on the makeup design for the show. She added chunky gold and rose coloured glitter to the models bare lids on top and bottom. The over all makeup was very minimal.

From research based on the official Anna Sui Pinterest page I know that Sui called the collection “Kozmik Rock Star”. Inspired the spirit of swinging London during the 60s and 70s and of boutiques like Granny Takes A Trip, I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet, Mr. Freedom, Hung On You, and A Dandy In Aspic.

Below are my three favorite images of Sui's mood board for this catwalk show. All taken from her Pinterest mood board, to view full board CLICK HERE!

As I have to create a look which is based around spring/summer inspired by Anna Sui I thought that it is important to understand what this collection was all about. Given that her collection was inspired by the 60's and 70's I have done further research of these eras to help with my design development for my spring/summer look.

The 60's

As I will be shooting a look inspired by this collection for my timed assessment I decided to research in popular fashion photographers during this time to see what was popular. A photographer I have come across is Hiro, an American fashion photographer. Below are a few images he produced in the 60's.

I love these three images because they have lots of tone and texture to them, this is something that I relate to Anna Sui. I believe that these images also have a lot of detail to them just like Sui's clothing and cosmetics.

Another fashion photographer during this time I thought is relevant to inspirations for a makeup look is Duffy. He was an extremely popular photographer during this time, he even photographed for Vogue and Twiggy during the 60's - which is relevant to inspiration from Anna Sui for her collections. These images were in Vogue in the 60's, the texture of the clothing in the right image reminds me of Sui's clothing range as well as details in her cosmetic packaging.

Although I know that Sui was highly inspired by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Jimmy Page I can vision the inspiration for my makeup look to be inspired by other iconic figures of the 60's.

Julie Christie was a popular beauty icon during the 60's, also a British movie legend. I think that she can be a good person to take inspiration from for the spring/summer shoot because she is beautiful and without being over the top, which is something I personally relate to when thinking about Anna Sui as a brand. The image below is of Christie in the 60's in an editorial magazine.

The 70's

I have come across a French photographer that I really like who was very popular during this time was Guy Bourdin. November 2014 - March 2015 there was an exhibition at summerset house called ‘Guy Bourdin: Image maker’. Bourdin had a 40 year career within fashion photography and was self-taught.

Photographed in 1970
Bourdin’s images were to advertise clothing, beauty and accessories. Below are some of my favorite images of Bourdin.
Photographed in 1973

Photographed in 1974

After looking at these images produced by Bourdin I think it would be great to take inspiration for shape of makeup in these images.
